MALCOLM YUEN completed his initial musical training at the Victorian College of the Arts, Australia. He began his initial conducting training with Robert Rosen (Melbourne) prior to his selection by Jorma Panula (Sibelius Academy, Finland) to join the Symphony Australia Conductor Development Programme before continuing his studies in the UK, and Central Europe studying further with Alan Hazeldine (Guildhall School, London), Johannes Schlaefli (Berner Kammerorchester, Switzerland), Robert Stankovsky (Czech-Slovak Radio Orchestra), Boris Spassov (Sofia National Opera/Ballet, Bulgaria) and Milen Nachev (National Radio Orchestra, Bulgaria).
Malcolm Yuen has toured China, the USA, United Kingdom, Austria, Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary and Bulgaria and has appeared with orchestras including the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ Concert Orchestra (Ireland), Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra, Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra (Czech Republic), the Bourgas Opera/ Philharmonic, Plovdiv State Opera (Bulgaria), the Vratza State Philharmonic Orchestra and orchestras throughout Australia.
In 2008, he was appointed Associate Conductor of the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2009, following a highly successful 3 month concert tour of the USA with the DPO (in association with Columbia Artist Management International), Malcolm Yuen was also appointed Music Director of the Irish Chamber Ensemble. Apart from an extensive mainstream symphonic repertoire extending to contemporary works of the new generation of composers, his theatre and operatic repertoire also includes Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd and Into the Woods, Verdi’s La Traviata, Il Trovatore and Rigoletto, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutte, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, J. Strauss’ Die Fledermaus and Bizet’s Carmen.
In addition Malcolm Yuen has recorded for film and television; working on the Russell Crowe feature film “Romper Stomper” and the highly acclaimed mini series Halifax f. p for Network GTV Nine and other work with Network Nine Special Projects, Australia. His performances have been broadcast on ABC FM (Australia), RTÉ Lyric FM (Ireland), German and Bulgarian television. In the contemporary field, he has worked with artists ranging from jazz pianist, Paul Grabowsky, to the cult Melbourne band “Hunters & Collectors”.
Malcolm Yuen is also a strong advocate in the development of youth and community music. In 2006, he was only the second conductor in 32 years to be appointed to the position of Principal Conductor & Musical Director of the Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra, Melbourne. He has prepared and conducted projects/Master Classes /festivals in Europe (including prize-winning ensembles at the Vienna International Music Festival), Asia and in Australia for Melbourne Youth Music, Australia, Education Victoria, as Chief Adjudicator for the Melbourne Strings Festival, Artistic Advisor and Juror with the Wiener Musikseminar, Vienna, and with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Outreach Programme.
